Golf in the City

A round of golf requires two things above all else – time and plenty of green space. Sometimes these can be tough to find, but these ultra-modern urban driving ranges offer the ideal quick-fix solution.

Singapore – Orchid Club

With 160 bays, the Orchid Club boasts one of the largest driving ranges in South East Asia, in addition to its three nine-hole courses. And all this in a lush green setting just a short drive from downtown Singapore.

The bays are spread across two levels, with the lower tier equipped with an auto-tee system as well as offering shelter from the elements in case a downpour strikes. Seven resident club professionals are on hand to provide tips on how to improve your swing.

Afterwards, why not reward your efforts at one of the Orchid Club’s selection of lounges and restaurants, or savour a sundowner on the terrace overlooking the tranquil waters of the Lower Seletar Reservoir.

New York City - Chelsea Piers

As far as water hazards go, the Hudson River is a somewhat unusual one. It surrounds the Chelsea Piers Golf Club driving range in Manhattan, threatening to swallow up any balls that manage to clear the high netting around the pier.

The range is part of a sports and entertainment complex that sits between 17th and 23rd street, a stone’s throw from the art galleries of Chelsea and shops and restaurants of the West Village. It has 52 bays across four tiers, all of which use an automatic ball tee-up system and are heated and weather-protected for year-round play.

Dotted with target greens, the fairway measures 200 yards, while the centre also offers a putting green, teaching academy and even simulators if you want to play a ‘full’ round.

The true calling card of Chelsea Piers, though, is its views: come at dusk to watch the sun set over Hoboken across the river while you hone your iron skills.

London – Greenwich Peninsula Golf Range

The new Greenwich Peninsula Golf Range (3) is the ultimate inner-city driving range. Perched on the banks of the River Thames, the Canary Wharf skyline looms to the left, while to the right, jets roar into London City Airport just beyond the O2 Arena.

The golfing facilities are second-to-none, with 60 bays looking out across the wide driving range and eight professionals on hand for lessons. But Greenwich Peninsula has its sights set on a more rounded experience: each carpeted bay has seating and tables, and food and drinks from the on-site bar-restaurant (which offers 600 different wines) can be brought out to you as you play. There is an outside patio for those who want to linger after their game, and an excellently stocked club shop should you need to update your equipment.
